Sayyidina I’sa in the Qur’an and the Sunnah

In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The signs that I’sa received before his prophethood:

Sayyidina I’sa, peace be upon him, was the Seal of the Prophets sent to the Children of Israel by Allah; he was given the Injeel (Gospel) and was supported by amazing miracles, among which were signs of his prophethood, and “sign” here means an evidence given beforehand that indicates, prepares, and proves his prophethood. He also performed other miracles all throughout his mission as a testimony from Allah that the message that he was conveying was the truth.

1- His birth without (the intervention of) a father:

One of the signs is his birth of a mother without a father, and this miracle is mentioned in the Qur’an as a testimony of his mother’s innocence and chastity. Furthermore, the Qur’an mentions in detail his creation in his mother’s womb through breathing (of ruh) from Jibril, peace be upon him. When Allah Most High created mankind He designed that this creature should breed through mating. Thus, it is Allah’s Method with his creatures that a husband and wife mate to conceive a child, marriage being the cause for this child to come into being. However, with the passage of time people started to believe that it was marriage in itself the cause of having children, as if Allah the Almighty had nothing to do with it. When one thinks that causes alone make things happen, then this is shirk (association of others with Allah), because reasons alone are not enough. They need Allah’s Will. Normally, husband and wife are necessary for a birth to take place. However, Allah the Almighty has set up four extraordinary situations as regards this issue:
1- That of the birth taking place of a man without a woman, as in the case of Saida Hawa (Eve);
2- That of the child being born of a woman only, as in the case of Sayyidina I’sa, peace be upon him;
3- That of the child coming into existence without a father nor mother, as in the case of Sayyidina Adam, peace be upon him;
4- That of a married couple in the prime of their life unable to have children.

Therefore, do you think that causes are enough to make things happen? The answer to this question is in the negative as Allah the Almighty, every now and then, teaches us that causes alone are not enough to make things happen, and this equation needs the One who created the causes themselves, that is Allah the Almighty, and it is through His Will that causes get disabled or even cancelled. Pay attention to the concept of disabling and that of canceling. When the husband and wife are young yet can’t conceive, that will be disabling the cause. Whereas when a baby is born without a father (as in the case of Sayyidina I’sa, peace be upon him) that will be canceling the cause. This aspect falls within the A’qida (Creed) and is particularly important.

Examples that help clarify that the real Agent behind the causes is Allah:

Example 1:

Consider the case of a person who places a lamp in a room but leaves it unplugged. However, it is connected to the remote control, operated by this person and turned on the moment someone enters and turns on the light using the switch. Thus, the person using the switch will assume, quite naturally, that turning on the switch is the cause behind the light being on, but in fact, it is the remote control in the hands of the man who is trying to teach the comers that turning on the switch doesn’t mean that the light will be on, and in order to prove that from time to time he won’t turn on the remote control the moment the switch is turned on by the comer.
Someone might maintain that the DNA holds all the genes programmed to carry out certain bodily functions. Those genes contain five thousand million instructions –some are responsible for the fetus formation; a gland is responsible for the balance of fluids, another one for the spinal reactions to danger, yet another one is responsible for respiratory system, and so forth. By saying this we overestimate the functioning of the system and come to consider that it is those elements that build up a rational human being, and this is shirk since we forget the Creator of Causes.

Example 2:

Consider a five-colour printer manufactured to print on both sides, perfectly designed as the outcome of one hundred years of development in printing industry. In a way its functioning resembles that of a human being –it has its perfect cartridges, electronic devices, and other sophisticated parts; it works by pressing keys. Where is its importance if there is no ink or paper? It is useless. Comparing the printer to the human body, the ink would be education and the electricity Allah’s Will, which is what makes things happen.
Therefore, we have creation, education, and activation, and the scholars of tawheed (Oneness of Allah) summarized all that in two words: indaha la biha (not because of causes but because of the Divine Will), which means, when Allah wants something to happen, it will happen, and that will be independently of causes.
For this reason scholars said: “Use the causes and put your trust in Allah, Who is the Cause behind causes.” What I mean to say is that causes aren’t enough to make something happen, as Allah’s Will is necessary at all times, and this A’qida was derived from the ayaat in the Noble Qur’an.
Hence, Allah Most High is the Cause behind every newborn baby; Allah’s Hand is what made it in the womb; the Lord is the One Who nourishes it; He is the One who has molded it that way, and the Divine Will is what has created this fetus in the mother’s womb.
We should comprehend everything through the Creator, the Lord, and the Organizer.
This is the first miracle of I’sa, peace be upon him.

Evidence from the Qur’an and the Sunnah on causes:

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

Narrated by Abdul Hameed from his mother, a servant of Bani Hashem’s, who used to serve a daughter of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who told his mother: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, taught me the following: Say at dawn and dusk of every day: Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with praising Him); la quwwata illa billah’ (there is no change of a condition nor power except by Allah); masha’a Allah kan wa ma lam yasha’a lam yakun (what Allah wills shall exist, and what Allah doesn’t will shall not exist), as he who says it at dawn, will be protected till dusk, and he who says it at dusk, will be protected till dawn

[Agreed upon]

Allah the Almighty says in the Noble Qur’an:

(Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Wakil (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian, etc.) over all things)

[Surat Al Zumar, ayah 62]

(and to Him return all affairs (for decision). So worship Him (O Muhammad) and put your trust in Him)

[Surat Hud, ayah se 123]

(all the matters at the end go to Allah (for decision). )

[Surat Al Shura, ayah 53]

(And you (Muhammad) threw not when you did throw but Allah threw)

[Surat Al Anfal, ayah 17]

Whatever of mercy (i.e. of good), Allah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it, and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

(The Hand of Allah is over their hands.)

[Surat Al Fateh, ayah 10]

(Whatever of mercy (i.e. of good), Allah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it, and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.)

[Surat Fatir, ayah 2]

2- Talking as an infant:

The second miracle that was a sign of his future prophethood was that I’sa, peace be upon him, was able to talk as an infant in his cradle, and this incident and the condition of his mother, who came to her tribe with her son I’sa, are described in the Noble Qur’an in Surat Mariam:

(Then she brought him (the baby) to her people, carrying him. They said: “O Mary! Indeed you have brought a thing Fariya (an unheard mighty thing). “O sister (i.e. the like) of Harun (Aaron) [not the brother of Musa (Moses), but he was another pious man at the time of Maryam (Mary)]! Your father was not a man who used to commit adultery, nor your mother was an unchaste woman.” Then she pointed to him. They said: “How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?” “He ['Iesa (Jesus)] said: Verily! I am a slave of Allah, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet;” “And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salat (prayer), and Zakat, as long as I live.” “And dutiful to my mother, and made me not arrogant, unblest.”And Salam (peace) is upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!” Such is ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). (it is) a statement of truth, about which they doubt (or dispute).)

[Surat Mariam, ayaat 27-34]

The miracles of I’sa, peace be upon him:

In respect of his miracles it can be said that Allah sent I’sa, peace be upon him, to people who used to brag about their superiority in medicine in their times. Hence, Allah endowed I’sa with striking miracles that for any independent observer clearly surpass the medical talents that his people had. In reality, however, no medicine can equal I’sa’s miracles, among which are the followings:
1- He fashioned a figure of a bird out of clay and breathed into it, and it became a bird by Allah’s Leave, and this is something entirely beyond human capacity.
2- He passed his hand over the akmah (one who was born blind) and healed him by Allah’s Leave.
3- He cured leprosy which is considered by medicine to be one of the incurable diseases.
4- He raised the dead, some said by simply calling them and others said by breathing into them.
5- He informed people of what they ate, and what they stored in their houses, and that is the kind of knowledge of the Unseen which is beyond the reach of any science.
6- Allah prevented the Children of Israel from killing him by making another man resemble him, and it was this man that was killed; then I’sa, peace be upon him, was raised to Allah.

(but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of ‘Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man))

[Surat Al Nisaa, ayah 157]

(For surely; they killed him not [i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam But Allah raised him ['Iesa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens).)

[Surat Al Nisaa, ayaat 157-158]

7- When al-hawariun (the disciples) asked Him to make a table (with food) descend for them from Heaven to eat from it and to be stronger in faith, Allah sent it down and it was a great miracle of I’sa’s, peace be upon him.
Allah the Almighty says:

?)Remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection). “O ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Remember My Favour to you and to your mother when I supported you with Ruh-ul-Qudus [Jibrael (Gabriel)] so that you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and when I taught you writing, Al-Hikmah (the power of understanding), the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel); and when you made out of the clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My Permission, and you breathed into it, and it became a bird by My Permission, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers by My Permission, and when you brought forth the dead by My Permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you (when they resolved to kill you) since you came unto them with clear proofs, and the disbelievers among them said: ‘This is nothing but evident magic.’ “And when I (Allah) put in the hearts of Al-Hawarieen (the disciples) [of 'Iesa (Jesus)] to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: “We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims.” (Remember) when Al-Hawariun (the disciples) said: “O ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Can your Lord send down to us a table spread (with food) from heaven?” ‘Iesa (Jesus) said: “Fear Allah, if you are indeed believers.” They said: “We wish to eat thereof and to be stronger in Faith, and to know that you have indeed told us the truth and that we ourselves be its witnesses.” ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: “O Allah, our Lord! Send us from heaven a table spread (with food) that there may be for us – for the first and the last of us – a festival and a sign from You; and provide us sustenance, for You are the Best of sustainers.” Allah said: “I am going to send it down unto you, but if any of you after that disbelieves, then I will punish him with a torment such as I have not inflicted on anyone among (all) the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns).”)

[Surat Al Maidah, ayaat 110-115]

And there is a whole surah in the Qur’an called after this miracle of his, namely Surat Al Maidah; and another one named after his mother, namely Surat Mariam; and a third one named after his mother’s family, which is Surat Al Imran.

Sayyidina I’sa in the Qur’an:

He is mentioned in the Qur’an by his name in many places:

(Then when ‘Iesa (Jesus) came to know of their disbelief, he said: “Who will be my helpers in Allah’s Cause?” Al-Hawariun (the disciples) said: “We are the helpers of Allah; we believe in Allah, and bear witness that we are Muslims (i.e. we submit to Allah).”)

[Surat Al Imran, ayah 52]

(And (remember) when Allah said: “O ‘Iesa (Jesus)! I will take you and raise you to Myself and clear you [of the forged statement that 'Iesa (Jesus) is Allah's son] of those who disbelieve, and I will make those who follow you (Monotheists, who worship none but Allah) superior to those who disbelieve [in the Oneness of Allah, or disbelieve in some of His Messengers, e.g. Muhammad, 'Iesa (Jesus), Musa (Moses), etc., or in His Holy Books, e.g. the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel), the Qur'an] till the Day of Resurrection. Then you will return to Me and I will judge between you in the matters in which you used to dispute.”)

[Surat Al Imran, ayah 55]

(Verily, the likeness of ‘Iesa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: “Be!” – and he was.)

[Surat Al Imran, ayah 59]

(And when ‘Iesa (Jesus) came with (Our) clear Proofs, he said: “I have come to you with Al-Hikmah (Prophethood), and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) in which you differ, therefore fear Allah and obey me,)

[Surat Al Zukruf, ayah 63]

He is also mentioned by the name of Messiah in many places:

(The Messiah will never be proud to reject to be a slave to Allah, nor the angels who are near (to Allah). And whosoever rejects His worship and is proud, then He will gather them all together unto Himself.)

[Surat Al Nisaa, ayah 172]

(But the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)] said: “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode . And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers.)

[Surat Al Maida, ayah 72]

(And the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths. They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth!)

[Surat Al Tobah, ayah 30]

And he is mentioned in the Qur’an as “son of Mariam” in the following places:

(And We made the son of Maryam (Mary) and his mother as a sign, And We gave them refuge on high ground, a place of rest, security and flowing streams.)

[Surat Al Momenoon, ayah 50]

(And when the son of Maryam (Mary) is quoted as an example [i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus) is worshipped like their idols), behold! Your people cry aloud (laugh out at the example). And say: "Are our aliha (gods) better or is he ['Iesa (Jesus)]?” They quoted not the above example except for argument. Nay! But they are a quarrelsome people. He ['Iesa (Jesus)] was not more than a slave. We granted Our Favour to him, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel (i.e. his creation without a father). And if it were Our Will, We would have [destroyed you (mankind) all, and] made angels to replace you on the earth.)

[Surat Al Zukruf, ayaat 57-60]

(And indeed, We gave Musa (Moses) the Book and followed him up with a succession of Messengers. And We gave ‘Iesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), clear signs and supported him with Ruh-ul-Qudus [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. Is it that whenever there came to you a Messenger with what you yourselves desired not, you grew arrogant? Some, you disbelieved and some, you killed.)

[Surat Al Baqara, ayah 87]

(Those Messengers! We preferred some to others; to some of them Allah spoke (directly); others He raised to degrees (of honour); and to ‘Iesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), We gave clear proofs and evidences, and supported him with Ruh-ul-Qudus [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. If Allah had willed, succeeding generations would not have fought against each other, after clear Verses of Allah had come to them, but they differed – some of them believed and others disbelieved. If Allah had willed, they would not have fought against one another, but Allah does what He likes.)

[Surat Al Baqara, ayah 253]

?)Remember) when the angels said: “O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word ["Be!" - and he was! i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam (Mary)] from Him, his name will be the Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, and will be one of those who are near to Allah.”)

[Surat Al Imran, ayah 45]

(And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,” – but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of ‘Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) ]: But Allah raised him ['Iesa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise. And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), but must believe in him ['Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), as only a Messenger of Allah and a human being], before his ['Iesa (Jesus) or a Jew's or a Christian's] death (at the time of the appearance of the angel of death). And on the Day of Resurrection, he ['Iesa (Jesus)] will be a witness against them.)

[Surat Al Nisaa, ayaat 157-159]

(O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth. The Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, (“Be!” – and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Ruh) created by Him; so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not: “Three (trinity)!” Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allah is (the only) One Ilah (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.)

[Surat Al Nisaa, ayah 171]

(Surely, in disbelief are they who say that Allah is the Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary) . Say (O Muhammad): “Who then has the least power against Allah, if He were to destroy the Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), his mother, and all those who are on the earth together?” And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them. He creates what He wills. And Allah is Able to do all things.)

[Surat Al Maida, ayah 17]

(And in their footsteps, We sent ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) , confirming the Taurat (Torah) that had come before him, and We gave him the Injeel (Gospel), in which was guidance and light and confirmation of the Taurat (Torah) that had come before it, a guidance and an admonition for Al-Muttaqun (the pious) Let the people of the Injeel (Gospel) judge by what Allah has revealed therein. And whosoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed (then) such (people) are the Fasiqun (the rebellious i.e. disobedient (of a lesser degree) to Allah.)

[Surat Al Maida, ayaat 46-47]

(Surely, they have disbelieved who say: “Allah is the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary).” But the Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)] said: “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode . And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers. Surely, disbelievers are those who said: “Allah is the third of the three (in a Trinity).” But there is no ilah (god) (none who has the right to be worshipped) but One Ilah (God -Allah). And if they cease not from what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall the disbelievers among them. Will they not repent to Allah and ask His Forgiveness? For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. The Messiah ['Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary), was no more than a Messenger; many were the Messengers that passed away before him. His mother [Maryam (Mary)] was a Siddiqah [i.e. she believed in the words of Allah and His Books (see ayah 66:12)]. They both used to eat food (as any other human being, while Allah does not eat). Look how We make the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to them, yet look how they are deluded away (from the truth). Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “How do you worship besides Allah something which has no power either to harm or to benefit you? But it is Allah Who is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.”)

[Surat Al Maida, ayaat 72-76]

(Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of Dawud (David) and ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). That was because they disobeyed (Allah and the Messengers) and were ever transgressing beyond bounds. They used not to forbid one another from the Munkar (wrong, evil-doing, sins, polytheism, disbelief, etc.) which they committed. Vile indeed was what they used to do.)

[Surat Al Maida, ayaat 78-79]

Send us from heaven a table spread (with food) that there may be for us – for the first and the last of us – a festival and a sign from You; and provide us sustenance, for You are the Best of sustainers.” Allah said: “I am going to send it down unto you, but if any of you after that disbelieves, then I will punish him with a torment such as I have not inflicted on anyone among (all) the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns).” And (remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): “O ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Did you say unto men: ‘Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?’ ” He will say: “Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner-self though I do not know what is in Yours, truly, You, only You, are the All-Knower of all that is hidden and unseen. “Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allah) did command me to say: ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’ And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are a Witness to all things. (This is a great admonition and warning to the Christians of the whole world). “If You punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise .”)

[Surat Al Maida, ayaat 110-118]

(And the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths. They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth! They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)) to worship none but One Ilah (God - Allah) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) . Praise and glory be to Him, (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).")

[Surat Al Toba, ayaat 30-31]

(Such is ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). (it is) a statement of truth, about which they doubt (or dispute). It befits not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son [this refers to the slander of Christians against Allah, by saying that 'Iesa (Jesus) is the son of Allah]. Glorified (and Exalted be He above all that they associate with Him). When He decrees a thing, He only says to it, “Be!” and it is. ['Iesa (Jesus) said]: “And verily Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him (Alone). That is the Straight Path. (Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism which He did ordain for all of His Prophets).”)

[Surat Mariam, ayaat 34-36]

(And (remember) when We took from the Prophets their covenant, and from you (O Muhammad), and from Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). We took from them a strong covenant. That He may ask the truthfuls (Allah’s Messengers and His Prophets) about their truth (i.e. the conveyance of Allah’s Message that which they were charged with). And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful torment (Hell-fire).)

[Surat Al Ahzab, ayaat 7-8]

(And indeed, We sent Nuh (Noah) and Ibrahim (Abraham), and placed in their offspring Prophethood and Scripture, and among them there is he who is guided, but many of them are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). Then, We sent after them, Our Messengers, and We sent ‘Iesa (Jesus) – son of Maryam (Mary), and gave him the Injeel (Gospel). And We ordained in the hearts of those who followed him, compassion and mercy. But the Monasticism which they invented for themselves, We did not prescribe for them, but (they sought it) only to please Allah therewith, but that they did not observe it with the right observance. So We gave those among them who believed, their (due) reward, but many of them are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).)

[Surat Al Hadid, ayaat 26-27]

(And (remember) when ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: “O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you confirming the Taurat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed . But when he (Ahmed i.e. Muhammad) came to them with clear proofs, they said: “This is plain magic.”)

[Surat Al Saff, ayah 6]

Saida Mariam, peace be upon her, in the Qur’an:

Allah the Almighty says:

(Allah chose Adam, Nuh (Noah), the family of Ibrahim (Abraham) and the family of ‘Imran above the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns) (of their times). Offspring, one of the other, and Allah is the All-Hearer, All-Knower. (Remember) when the wife of ‘Imran said: “O my Lord! I have vowed to You what (the child that) is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services (free from all worldly work; to serve Your Place of worship), so accept this, from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing.” Then when she delivered her [child Maryam (Mary)], she said: “O my Lord! I have delivered a female child,” – and Allah knew better what she delivered, – “And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam (Mary), and I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and for her offspring from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast.” So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with goodly acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakariya (Zachariya). Every time he entered Al-Mihrab to (visit) her , he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: “O Maryam (Mary)! From where have you got this?” She said, “This is from Allah.” Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit.” At that time Zakariya (Zachariya) invoked his Lord, saying: “O my Lord! Grant me from You, a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation.” Then the angels called him, while he was standing in prayer in Al-Mihrab (a praying place or a private room), (saying): “Allah gives you glad tidings of Yahya (John), confirming (believing in) the Word from Allah [i.e. the creation of 'Iesa (Jesus), the Word from Allah ("Be!" - and he was!)], noble, keeping away from sexual relations with women, a Prophet, from among the righteous.” He said: “O my Lord! How can I have a son when I am very old, and my wife is barren?” Allah said: “Thus Allah does what He wills.” He said: “O my Lord! Make a sign for me.” Allah said: “Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three days except with signals. And remember your Lord much (by praising Him again and again), and glorify (Him) in the afternoon and in the morning.” And (remember) when the angels said: “O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allah has chosen you, purified you (from polytheism and disbelief), and chosen you above the women of the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns) (of her lifetime).” O Mary! “Submit yourself with obedience to your Lord (Allah, by worshipping none but Him Alone) and prostrate yourself, and Irka’i (bow down etc.) along with Ar-Raki’un (those who bow down etc.).” This is a part of the news of the Ghaib (unseen, i.e. the news of the past nations of which you have no knowledge) which We inspire you with (O Muhammad). You were not with them, when they cast lots with their pens as to which of them should be charged with the care of Maryam (Mary); nor were you with them when they disputed. (Remember) when the angels said: “O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word ["Be!" - And he was! i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam (Mary)] from Him, his name will be the Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, and will be one of those who are near to Allah.” “He will speak to the people in the cradle and in manhood, and he will be one of the righteous.” She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me.” He said: “So (it will be) for Allah creates what He wills. When He has decreed something, He says to it only: “Be!” and it is. And He (Allah) will teach him ['Iesa (Jesus)] the Book and Al-Hikmah (i.e. the Sunnah, the faultless speech of the Prophets, wisdom, etc.), (and) the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel). And will make him ['Iesa (Jesus)] a Messenger to the Children of Israel (saying): “I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, that I design for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah’s Leave; and I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I bring the dead to life by Allah’s Leave. And I inform you of what you eat, and what you store in your houses. Surely, therein is a sign for you, if you believe. And I have come confirming that which was before me of the Taurat (Torah), and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a proof from your Lord. So fear Allah and obey me. Truly! Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him (Alone). This is the Straight Path. Then when ‘Iesa (Jesus) came to know of their disbelief, he said: “Who will be my helpers in Allah’s Cause?” Al-Hawariun (the disciples) said: “We are the helpers of Allah; we believe in Allah, and bear witness that we are Muslims (i.e. we submit to Allah).” Our Lord! We believe in what You have sent down, and we follow the Messenger ['Iesa (Jesus)]; so write us down among those who bear witness (to the truth i.e. La ilaha ill-Allah – none has the right to be worshipped but Allah). And they (disbelievers) plotted [to kill 'Iesa (Jesus)], and Allah planned too. And Allah is the Best of the planners. And (remember) when Allah said: “O ‘Iesa (Jesus)! Then you will return to Me and I will judge between you in the matters in which you used to dispute.” “As to those who disbelieve, I will punish them with a severe torment in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.” And as for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah) and do righteous good deeds, Allah will pay them their reward in full. And Allah does not like the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers). This is what We recite to you (O Muhammad) of the Verses and the Wise Reminder (i.e. the Qur’an). Verily, the likeness of ‘Iesa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: “Be!” – And he was. (This is) the truth from your Lord, so be not of those who doubt.)

[Surat Al Imran, ayaat 33-60]

(And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam (Mary) a grave false charge (that she has committed illegal sexual intercourse);)

[Surat Al Nisaa, ayah 156]

(And mention in the Book (the Qur’an, O Muhammad, the story of) Maryam (Mary), when she withdrew in seclusion from her family to a place facing east. She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our Ruh [angel Jibrael (Gabriel)], and he appeared before her in the form of a man in all respects.? She said: “Verily! I seek refuge with the Most Beneficent (Allah) from you, if you do fear Allah.” (The angel) said: “I am only a Messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son.” She said: “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?” He said: “So (it will be), your Lord said: ‘That is easy for Me (Allah): And (We wish) to appoint him as a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us (Allah), and it is a matter (already) decreed, (by Allah).’ “So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place (i.e. Bethlehem valley about 4-6 miles from Jerusalem). And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She said: “Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!” Then [the babe 'Iesa (Jesus) or Jibrael (Gabriel)] cried unto her from below her, saying: “Grieve not! Your Lord has provided a water stream under you; “And shake the trunk of date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you.” “So eat and drink and be glad, and if you see any human being, say: ‘Verily! I have vowed a fast unto the Most Beneficent (Allah) so I shall not speak to any human being this day.’ “Then she brought him (the baby) to her people, carrying him. I am a slave of Allah, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet;” “And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salat (prayer), and Zakat, as long as I live.” “And dutiful to my mother, and made me not arrogant, unblest. “And Salam (peace) be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!” Such is ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary).

[Surat Mariam, ayaat 16-36]

Sayyidina I’sa, peace be upon him, in the Noble Hadith:

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am most akin to the son of Mary among the whole of mankind, and the Prophets are of different mothers, but of one Deen, and there has been no prophet between me and him (i.e. I’sa).

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, also said:

Neither has the sky shaded one more truthful and honest than Abu Dharr nor has the earth had anyone walk over it like him. (In these matters) he is like I’sa bin Mariam.

And he also said about I’sa, peace be upon him:

Abu Dharr is the I’sa of my nation in his zuhd (abstinence).

And he also said:

Allah, Glory to Him, commanded Yahya ibn Zakariya to act according to five precepts and order the Children of Israel to act according to them, but he almost slackened off in doing so. Thereupon, I’sa said to him: Allah enjoined you to act according to five precepts and to command the Children of Israel to act accordingly, so either you tell them or I will do so.
Yahya said: O brother, I am afraid that if you preceded me, I would be tortured or made to sink under the ground. He said: Yahya gathered the Children of Israel in Jerusalem until the Masjid was filled and people sat on its balconies. He praised Allah then said: “Allah enjoined me to act according to five precepts and commanded you too to act according to them. The first one is to worship Allah and associate none with Him in worship. The likeness here is that of a man who bought a slave for pure gold or silver, and that slave worked (for him), but the money he earned was given to another than his master. Who would like his slave to be like that one? Allah, Exalted is He, created you and provided you with sustenance so worship Him and associate none with Him in worship.
I command you to offer salah because Allah, Exalted is He, erects His Face before the face of His servant as long as the servant does not look right or left, so when you offer salah, look neither right nor left.
I command you to fast, the likeness of which is that of a man perfumed with musk among a group of people, all of whom can smell it. Indeed, a fasting person smelling badly is better in the Sight of Allah than the one smelling of musk.
I command you to give sadaqah, and the likeness of that is that of a man captured by the enemy who tied his hands to his neck and is taking him to be executed. Thereupon the man asks: “Isn’t there anything I can do to ransom my life from you?” He keeps on ransoming himself from them by (giving) little or much until he manages to ransom himself.
I command you to mention Allah, Glory to Him, frequently; the likeness of which is that of a man chased by the enemy, who enters a fortified fort to save himself. A servant is more secure from Shaytan when he mentions the name of Allah, Exalted is He.

And the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said about I’sa, peace be upon him:

He saw someone stealing. He said to him: “Have you stolen something?’ The thief said: “No, I haven’t. I swear by Him, the Only God.” He believed him and disbelieved his own eyes.

And he also said:

I’sa son of Mary said: Matters are of three kinds: a matter whose righteousness is obvious to you, so follow it; a matter whose wrongness is obvious to you, so avoid it; and a matter that is controversial, so ask the person who knows about it.

And also:

A group of people passed by I’sa son of Mary, peace be upon him, who said: “One of those people will die today if Allah wills.” And they went on. When they came back later in the evening with loads of wood, he said: “Put down your loads.” Then he said to the person whom he predicted to be dead that day: “Put down your wood and untie your load.” So the man did, and there was a black snake in that load. I’sa asked him: “Haven’t you done something special today?” The man said he had done nothing special. Then I’sa asked him: “Remember something special you did today.” Then the man said: “I did nothing but give a piece of bread I had to a poor man who begged me for some.” I’sa said: “You were protected by that deed.”

Narrated by Dihya Al Kalbi, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
Narrated by Dihya Al Kalbi, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: ((I was sent by the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to Heraclius, the emperor of the Romans, and when I was shown into his presence, I gave him the letter, and he started reading it. It began “From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Heraclius, a Roman citizen.” There was also a nephew of his there, who, on hearing this, said to him: “Don’t read this letter today.” The emperor asked him why he shouldn’t read it, to which he answered that it was because of two reasons, the first one being that the letter started mentioning its author first, and the second one that it used the expression “a Roman citizen” not the “Emperor of the Romans”.
Then they sent for a priest whose opinion was considered highly, and the emperor described the problem to him and made him read the letter. The priest said: “This is what we have been waiting for, the glad tiding given by I’sa, peace be upon him.”
The emperor said to him: “What would you suggest I should do?” “If I were you, I would believe and follow him.” However the emperor said: “If I believed in him, my kingdom would be gone.”
Dihya continued: “So we went out, and the emperor called for Abu Sufian ibn Harb, who was in Sham at that time.”
He asked him: “Tell me about this man from your land. How old is he?” He answered: “Young.” He said: “What about his origin?” Abu Sufiyan said: “He is of the best families among us.” The emperor commented: “This is a sign of prophethood.” Then he asked: “How about his honesty?” Abu Sufiyan answered: “He never lied in his life,” to which the emperor commented: “This is a sign of prophethood.” Then he asked: “Has anybody amongst those who embraced his religion become displeased with it and renounced it afterwards?” He replied in the negative, to which he commented: “This is a sign of prophethood.” He asked again: “Has he ever broken his commitment if he and his companions got engaged in a fight?” To this Abu Sufiyan answered: “I know of people who fought him, he defeated them; and they defeated him.” And the emperor commented again: “This is a sign of prophethood.” Then he called for me and said to me: “Tell your companion that I know he is a prophet, but I can’t give up my kingdom.”
Abdullah bin Mas`ud transmitted that the Messenger of Allah sent eighty men to An-Najashi. The Quraysh sent `Amr bin Al-`As and `Umarah bin Al-Walid with a gift for An-Najashi. When they, `Amr and `Umarah, came to An-Najashi, they prostrated before him and stood on his right and left. `Amr and `Umarah said:
“Some of our cousins migrated to your land; they have abandoned us and our religion.” An-Najashi said: “Where are they?” They said: “They are in your land, so send for them.” So An-Najashi summoned the Muslims. Ja`far said to them: “I will be your speaker today.” So the Muslims followed Ja`far and when he was admitted to the king’s presence, he did not prostrate after greeting him. They were asked: “Why do you not prostrate before the king?” Ja`far said: “We only prostrate before Allah, Exalted and Glorified is He.” They said: “Why is that?” He said: “Allah has sent a Messenger to us from Him, who ordered us not to prostrate to anyone except Allah, Exalted and Glorified is He. He also ordered us to perform salah and give sadaqah.” `Amr bin Al-`As said: “They contradict your creed about I’sa, son of Maryam.” The king asked: “What do you say about I’sa and his mother Maryam?” Ja`far said: “We only say what Allah said about him, that he is Allah’s Word, a soul created by Allah and sent down to the Honorable Virgin who had not been touched by a man nor gave birth before.” An-Najashi lifted a twig and said: “O Ethiopians, monks and priests! By Allah, what they say about I’sa is no more than what we say about him, not even a difference that equals this twig do I find there. You are welcome among us, and greetings to him who has sent you. I bear witness that he is Allah’s Messenger, whom we read about in the Injeel. He is the Prophet, whose coming was foretold by I’sa son of Maryam. Live wherever you wish. By Allah, had I not been entrusted with the responsibilities of kingship, I would have gone to him, so that I could be honored by carrying his slippers and his water for wudu’.” And the king ordered that the gifts of the idolaters be returned to them.))

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds
