Diseases and Psychological disorders

In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

As medicine advances, more and more diseases caused by deterioration of the psychological state are discovered. As we know, man is made of mind, heart, and body, and since the heart is the center of the ego, any psychological breakdown, chronic anxiety, fear, or grudge, would have a physical reflection. It is said that most cases of blood pressure are traced back to stress. In other words, anxiety, fear, sadness, envy, hatred, and antipathy, which are categorized as psychological tensions all have physical influence. Since human being is a whole, any deterioration in his/her psychological state would surely reflect on his/her body. Hence, psychological stress and tension are the reasons behind most chronic diseases.

The state of the disbeliever:

Allah the Almighty says in the Quran:

(We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve)

[Surat Al Imran, ayah 151]

Hence, terror is one of the reasons behind diseases. Allah said also:

(So invoke not with Allah another ilah (god) lest you be among those who receive punishment)

[Surat Al Shuaraa, ayah 213]

And He said:

(Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient, Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him, And niggardly when good touches him;- Except those devoted to Salat (prayers))

[Surat Al Maarij, ayahs 19-22]

By the way, the word Insan (Human being) in the Quran as a definite noun, refers to man before believing in Allah. That means, the disbeliever suffers from destructive psychological crisis. There are many deteriorating psychological cases due to anxiety, fear, terror, despair, and depression.

Tawheed (Monotheism) is the base:

When one believes that there is only One God, when he/she keeps straight on Allah’s path, and reconciles with Him, he/she has a great psychological state that reflects positively on his/her body, she/she doesn’t suffer of blood pressure or heart disorders.
Tawheed (monotheism) is fundamental to the believer, and it has been said: “slaves (of Allah) have never learnt better than Tawheed”, which requires belief in Allah as a Creator, Educator, and Controller:

(It is He (Allah) Who is the only Ilah (God to be worshipped) in the heaven and the only Ilah (God to be worshipped) on the earth)

[Surat Al Zukruf, ayah 84]

You believe that:

(And to Allah belongs the Ghaib (unseen) of the heavens and the earth, and to Him return all affairs (for decision). So worship Him (O Muhammad) and put your trust in Him)

[Surat Hud, ayah 123]

You believe that:

(Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Wakil (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian, etc.) over all things)

[Surat Al Zumar, ayah 62]

You believe that Allah Rules and no one else does:

(There is none to put back His Judgement)

[Surat Al Ra’d, ayah 41]

And that:

(And He makes none to share in His Decision and His Rule.)

[Surat al Kahf, ayah 26]

You believe that:

(And Allah judges with truth, while those to whom they invoke besides Him, cannot judge anything)

[Surat Ghafer, ayah 20]

You believe that:

(There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth))

[Surat Hud, ayah 56]

You believe that:

(Whatever of mercy (i.e. of good), Allah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it, and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter)

[Surat Fatir, ayah 2]

Results of Tawheed:

1- No fear and no grieve:

Allah says in Quran:

(Verily, those who say: “Our Lord is Allah (Alone),” and then they Istaqamu, on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying): “Fear not, nor grieve!)

[Surat Fussilat, ayah 30]

(Fear not) refers to the future, (nor grieve) refers to the past. When you reconcile with Allah and follow His right path the future is guaranteed for you.
It was narrated that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) never regretted anything he missed in the worldly life. So the who doesn’t regret what he/she has missed in the past, and doesn’t fear what is awaiting in the future, can achieve his/her safety and get great happiness.

2- Being secure:

Allah the Almighty says:

((So) which of the two parties has more right to be in security? If you but know It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allah) , for them (only) there is security)

[Surat Al Anaam, ayah 81-82]

(for them (only) there is security)

For them only (not for them and for others), as this belief fills the soul with security.

(and they are the guided)

[Surat Al Anaam, ayah 82]

Security is different from safety; safety means being safe from adversity, but it doesn’t mean being secure, as expecting adversity is a big adversity. The one who expects illness is ill, and the one who fears poverty is poor. Being secure is to be free from expecting adversity. What prevents you from expecting adversity?
Allah says:

(Say: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector))

[Surat Al Tawba, ayah 51]

Allah the Almighty reassures you, He says:

(Then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery)

[Surat Taha, ayah 123]

His mind is rightly guided, and his soul never goes astray.
He also says:

(And whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve)

[Surat Al Baqara, ayah 38]

3- Being confident:

This is a critical point in this topic, Allah says:

(So plot against me, all of you)

Our Master Dawood (David) Said in Quran:

(And give me no respite, I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth))

[Surat Hud, ayahs 55-56]

4- Psychological happiness that reflects on the body:

Hence, Tawheed, reconciling with Allah, integrity on Allah’s path, and approaching Allah, are all healthy matters; they achieve psychological happiness, balance, coherence, solidness, confidence, and optimism. Good psychological states all reflect on the body in healthy ways.
I always say: faith is health. Tawheed, believing that matters are controlled by Allah, and connecting with one party only (Allah), achieve good health.
Believers never regret for what they missed in the past, and never feel sorrow of what to come, and this psychological state comes from faith, obedience, reconciling with Allah, approaching Allah, and loving Him. Allah says in the Quran:

(Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision))

[Surat Al Nahl, ayah 97]

The life of the believer is different from the lives of others:

It was said: Allah bestows lot of people with health, money, and beauty, but He gives tranquility only to the close believers.
I am sure that the believer’s health is different and better than the disbeliever’s health.
Allah says in the Quran:

(Or do those who earn evil deeds think that We shall hold them equal with those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, in their present life and after their death? Worst is the judgment that they make.)

[Surat Al Jathia, ayah 21]

Notice, “in their present life” means even in their health and relations, as it is impossible that you disobey Allah and win, and it is impossible to obey Him and lose. If Allah is with you, who will be against you? And if Allah is against you, who is with you?
One of the believers said: if the kings know the happiness we have, they will fight us with swords to have it.
Dear honorable brothers, by obeying Allah you achieve the best of welfare, the best of safety, the best of happiness, the best of security, the best of success, the best of triumph, and the best of superiority. Allah says:

(And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger he has indeed achieved a great achievement (i.e. he will be saved from the Hell-fire and made to enter Paradise))

[Surat Al Ahzab, ayah 71]

By worshiping Allah, you gain healthy body, and you are granted security in your heart. Allah says:

(Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest)

[Surat Al Ra’d, vers 28]

Beware of faith weakness:

The hidden Shirk (polytheism) is an outcome of weak faith, Allah says:

(And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners unto Him [i.e. they are polytheists)

[Surat Yusuf, ayah 106]

This hidden Shirk due to weak faith is the reason behind the aggravation of psychological diseases which result in increasing physical diseases.

To change our state we need to change ourselves

This is the concise briefing, and it was said: Slaves (of Allah) have never learnt better than Tawheed.
Talking about physical health in relation with psychological state has so many details. It is said that those who visit psychological clinics nowadays are close to 150% of population, which means that 100% are visitors and half of that number repeat their visit. That is the result of the edginess in the world, as it is tremendously advanced in terms of technology, but it is horribly backward in terms of morals and social values.
People used to be passionate, tender, loving, and loyal, but now people follow their interests. They have replaces values with interests and needs so they fall, and when man falls he gets more vulnerable to psychological disorders that eventually reflect badly on the body. Allah the Almighty says in the noble Quran:

(Verily! Allah will not change the good condition of a people as long as they do not change their state of goodness themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah))

[Surat Al Ra’d, ayah 11]

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds
